Oil Change Step-by-Step Tutorial
A complete walkthrough of how to change your vehicle's oil and filter properly.
Changing Your Oil at Home
An oil change is one of the most basic and important maintenance tasks you can do yourself. Here's how to do it right.
What You'll Need
- New oil (check your owner's manual for type and quantity)
- New oil filter
- Drain pan
- Socket wrench for drain plug
- Oil filter wrench
- Funnel
- Gloves and rags
Step 1: Warm Up the Engine
Run the engine for a few minutes. Warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants out.
Step 2: Lift and Secure the Vehicle
Use jack stands for safety. Never work under a vehicle on a jack alone.
Step 3: Locate and Remove Drain Plug
Position your drain pan and remove the drain plug. Let all oil drain completely.
Step 4: Replace Oil Filter
Remove the old filter and apply a thin coat of new oil to the new filter gasket. Hand tighten only.
Step 5: Replace Drain Plug
Install a new crush washer if required, and torque to specification.
Step 6: Add New Oil
Add the correct amount of new oil using a funnel. Check the level with the dipstick.
Step 7: Check for Leaks
Start the engine and check around the filter and drain plug for leaks.
